Asclepias curassavica, commonly known as Tropical Milkweed, thrives in USDA zones 8-11 and reaches 2-4 feet tall with a 1-2 foot spread. This Central and South American native demands full sun and produces striking red and yellow blooms from spring through fall. As a critical monarch butterfly host plant, it supports the complete lifecycle of these iconic pollinators. Low-maintenance and versatile, it excels in butterfly gardens, mixed borders, and container plantings. For optimal health, the LSU AgCenter recommends cutting plants back to 6 inches in June and October, then disposing of trimmings to minimize OE (Ophryocystis elektroscirrha) spore transmission and reduce butterfly congregation on foliage.
