The Southland Muscadine (Vitis rotundifolia 'Southland') is a vigorous, self-fertile vine cultivar that thrives in USDA zones 7–9 with full sun exposure. Vines reach 20 feet in length and spread 10–15 feet when trained on appropriate support structures. This deciduous variety produces medium to large, black berries with distinctive sweet flavor and firm skin, maturing mid to late summer. The robust foliage delivers substantial seasonal shade, while small spring flowers give way to exceptional fruit yield. Southland Muscadines excel in juice, jelly, and jam production due to elevated sugar content and concentrated flavor profile. The cultivar demonstrates strong resistance to Pierce's disease, a significant concern in traditional grapevine production. Optimal performance requires well-drained, slightly acidic soil (pH 5.5–6.5) and consistent pruning protocols to sustain vine structure and consistent productivity.
