Availability: Available for pickup at our Broussard garden center.
LSU Scott’s Black is a fig released by Louisiana State University. The fruit ripens dark purple to nearly black, with a rich, sweet interior. It was selected to handle our heat and humidity, so it belongs in a south Louisiana yard.
Give the tree full sun and soil that drains. Water it through the first couple of summers while the roots settle. Figs fruit on new growth; a freeze may burn the tops, and the plant usually comes back from the base. Birds will find ripe fruit before you do if you don’t check the tree often.
🌎 Zones: 8–10.
☀️ Sunlight: Full sun.
💧 Soil & Care: Plant in well-drained soil. Water during dry stretches the first year. Do not bury the trunk in a wet hole.
🍈 Fruit: Dark purple to black figs in summer. Flavor is sweet. Harvest when the fruit is soft and hangs down.
