American pawpaw is a native tree with fruit like banana custard. Not a papaya. It likes some shade and decent soil, and it fruits better with a second, different pawpaw nearby for pollination.
🌎 Zones: 5–9. We’re on the warm edge of that. ☀️ Sunlight: Morning sun or light shade. Full, blasting afternoon sun is hard on it. 💧 Soil & Care: Moist, well-drained soil. Don’t let it bake dry the first year. Mulch. 🥭 Fruit: – Soft, custard texture – Banana-mango flavor – Late summer into early fall – Plan on two trees if you want a crop
