Bring home one of the most talked-about cool-climate fig varieties around — the legendary Desert King Fig. Known for producing massive, sweet figs with vibrant strawberry-red flesh, Desert King has built a loyal following because of its heavy early crop, cold tolerance, and ability to produce where many other figs struggle.
This variety is especially prized for its huge breba crop — figs produced on older wood that ripen earlier than many other varieties. In cooler or shorter-season climates, Desert King often outperforms other figs by delivering reliable summer harvests when others are still trying to size up fruit.

🌿 Fig-Specific Note on Leaf Rust 🌿
Fig rust (small orange-brown spots on leaves) is a very common fungal issue on fig trees, especially in humid Southern climates like ours in Louisiana. It primarily affects the leaves, is not deadly to the tree, and does not impact fruit production long-term.
New leaves typically emerge healthy after removing affected ones. We inspect plants before shipping, but minor rust can develop or become more visible in transit. It is easily managed with good care (remove spotted leaves, improve airflow, avoid overhead watering).
The fruit is stunning:
🌿 Bright green to yellow-green skin
🍓 Deep strawberry-red interior
🍯 Rich, sweet, jammy flavor with berry notes
📏 Large figs often much bigger than standard varieties
Desert King is a vigorous grower with a lush tropical appearance that looks incredible in edible landscapes, patios, homesteads, food forests, and container gardens.
Perfect for:
✔ Backyard orchards
✔ Homesteading
✔ Edible landscaping
✔ Patio containers
✔ Greenhouse growing
✔ Collectors of rare figs
✔ Cooler climate fig growers
One of Desert King’s biggest advantages is its reputation for performing well in cooler coastal and northern climates where many figs fail to ripen properly. It’s widely considered one of the best fig varieties for the Pacific Northwest and other mild-summer regions because of its dependable early crop.
This fig is also highly adaptable:
• Can be planted in-ground in suitable climates
• Excellent for large pots and containers
• Responds well to pruning
• Can be kept smaller for patios and small spaces
🌞 Light Requirements: Full Sun
💧 Watering: Moderate; prefers well-drained soil
📏 Mature Size: Approximately 10–20 ft in-ground, smaller in containers with pruning
❄️ Cold Hardy: Commonly grown in USDA Zones 7–10
Desert King is classified as a San Pedro-type fig, meaning its famous breba crop develops without pollination. In many parts of the United States, growers focus primarily on this heavy early crop, which is what made Desert King famous in the first place.
These figs are excellent for:
• Fresh eating
• Preserves and jams
• Drying
• Baking
• Charcuterie boards
• Gourmet desserts
Figs are one of the oldest cultivated fruits in human history, and Desert King remains one of the most unique and rewarding varieties available today.
