Althea, also called rose of Sharon, is a cold-hardy hibiscus relative that blooms from summer into fall when many shrubs are done. It handles South Louisiana heat well. Plant it in full sun to light shade in soil that drains, and water it through its first summer. Prune in late winter if you want to shape it.
Stop by our Broussard garden center, near Lafayette, to see it in person and ask our staff about growing it in Acadiana.
